Civic officials have claimed the city has 600-800 ventilators combining the private and public sector to tackle acute cases of coronavirus should Mumbai see a big wave in the weeks to come, while state hospitals say they have over 1,000 ventilators and nearly double the number of isolation beds. But will the numbers suffice if and when community transmission begins and mass hospitalisations are required? Public health activists have also questioned the working condition of ventilators and distribution in rural areas.
